Fort Pickens, FL

Rainbow over Pensacola Bay

Fort Pickens sits at the far end of Santa Rosa Island, a long narrow island separating The Gulf of Mexico from Pensacola Bay. We never tired of the “commute” to and from the campground. Dramatic skies, aquamarine waters, swooping pelicans and wading birds on stilt-like legs quickstepping through the surf always added interest.

Pelicans enjoying their evening meal.

The area has a rich history, including early explorers and pirates, quiet camping, great sunsets, and some of the palest blue water this side of the Caribbean.

It was here that we came to understand that we could explore areas more fully if we had bicycles. We found a great bike shop in Pensacola, and now our traveling van sports two bikes on the back door.

We rode our bikes out to the Fort, which has an interesting history of guarding the Bay. Pensacola Bay is very deep, making it a desirable conquest for invading armadas and pirates.

We discovered Peg Leg Pete’s, the closest thing we’ve had to a neighborhood pub since we left Lima, PA. We frequently indulged in oysters on the half shell. Fresh, icy and reasonably priced.

We joined new friends Bob and Jane for a few get- togethers, two at Peg Leg Pete’s. Such fun to compare notes and our shared challenges. Living on the road has different challenges from those of living in a brick and mortar house. Where should we go next? How are you getting your mail? Do we really need a pop up screen house to enjoy the outdoors without bugs? (YES, more on this later…)

This campsite will always hold sweet memories and the hope that our paths will again cross with our new friends’.
