Autumn in PA and Heading South

Autumn in PA and Heading South

Late October into December 2022 We followed our routine of returning to the Philadelphia suburbs for about a month in the fall. This time off the road gives us an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. No matter how carefully we plan, we always run out of time for visiting before we run out of folks we’d like to see. We feel lucky to still have so many wonderful friends from our life in Delaware County. On the more…

Autumn on the Chesapeake…and Thereabouts

Autumn on the Chesapeake…and Thereabouts

Our plans to travel the outer coast of Virginia stalled under the remnants of Hurricane Ian. During the last week of September 2022, we were camping at Kiptopeke State Park in Cape Charles, Virginia. We rode our bikes on the nature trail, had wonderful oysters at The Oyster Farm, and then the edge of the storm caught up with us. Rain, rain, and more rain. Our campsite flooded, so we moved to another site that was better situated. Rain and…

Meandering South Along the Atlantic Coast

Meandering South Along the Atlantic Coast

Late October – Early November 2021 Huntsville, Alabama Traveling in a compact motor home brings the opportunity to go a bit off the beaten track. Many state parks were built in the 1940s, when camping rigs were smaller and sites were nestled in the woods. The sites are usually spacious and set further apart. We really like these campgrounds, even though the amenities may be a bit behind the times. The Monte Sano State Park near Huntsville, Alabama is one…

October in the Mountains

October in the Mountains

Our search to find a good base for exploring Asheville led us to Lake Powhatan Recreation Area. Lake Powhatan is near Bent Creek, just a few minutes from downtown Asheville. The campsites are in the woods bordering the small lake. It’s small and sweet, with nice woodsy trails. Our timing was good. The surrounding mountains were starting to put on their fall foliage show. Our afternoon drives have been golden, with the kind of blue skies and puffy clouds that…

Wrapping Up 2020

Wrapping Up 2020

December 2020 During our early December stay on Santa Rosa Island, we were fortunate to reconnect with the Campbells, a couple we met last year. During our first trip to Fort Pickens, Judy and I bumped into each other in the laundry room. We chatted and discovered that we were on similar paths. They’d sold their house, too, and were also traveling full time in a conversion van. (In camping speak – a Class B) With some people, you just…

Testing the Travel Waters, Again

Testing the Travel Waters, Again

July 2, 2020 Like many other full time travelers, we took a break from the road during the Covid-19 quarantine. What we imagined might be a several-week hiatus turned into three months. We are very fortunate and grateful that we had kind family members willing to host us and a lovely place to stay during this time. By mid-June, campgrounds were reopening, with the sort of safety precautions one would expect. We knew that traveling would be different, but we…
